I've been on various socials over the years, but unfortunately my initial enthusiasm slowly grew sour, as social media took over society and rewrote its rules for the worse. So I've left a lot of platforms behind over the years, like fucking Facebook, or fucking Twitter. Especially those motherfucking two, mY GOD what a scourge they brought upon us.

But for the moments it shined and made us laugh, or brought us all together, I still also have fond memories of social media, and I still went and looked for that feeling in the fediverse. All those words are part of me, so here they are including ones from deleted accounts, intact in the original cringe of their times. Yes even the current times I'm afraid!!

Yesterday I learned that Lemmy is the pinnacle of complicated due to the separation between instances (servers) and apps.

IMO it's equally complicated like signing up for an email provider and setting up the email app on the average smartphone.

That's not lemmy specific that's the whole point of it and all fediverse apps. They don't lock you in their app or ecosystem. Your comparison with emails is actually the whole point, you can use Gmail with any client and send and receive mails from any other mail platform like Proton. The fact you need two separate pieces is exactly what makes the fediverse resilient.

People need to learn to get over this barrier because the complexity is just a psychological barrier, it's self imposed after years of walled gardens that take you by the hand to lock the door behind. People need to learn a bit more complexity just like they're not gonna escape having their attention spans destroyed without accepting the difficulty of focusing on longer form media. It will take effort to dig ourselves out of the hellhole that the internet became. It's not going to happen with one click or without friction because it's been made hard on purpose to escape the simplicity.

This is a great read but I feel it really shies away from saying the one bad word it skirts around. "We're trapped in systems designed for scarcity and competition instead of abundance and cooperation" – We're trapped in capitalism. We have to say it because for a lot of people it still doesn't stick. And I'm not saying it was the first individualistic system, but it certainly rewired our entire species to it.

A lot of the existing, working solutions that are already put into practice at smaller scales, are silenced or ignored because they function so fundamentally differently from what Capitalism teaches us is how "things work". Capitalistic classe don't want people to learn about cooperatives and ranked voting. Hell I'm giving it five or ten more years before the idea of a library becomes completely alien to most. "It would never work, one person would come and steal all the books!". This is the sad state our species has reached.

It's the same kind of blockage for a post-capitalism society. People literally can't reason in the terms needed for it. They do see the tools like you mention, but they don't believe in them because the drive of cooperating blindly with others, which has brought our species to this point, is broken. People have been brainwashed by zero-sum games and prison dillemas and entire decades of depression post-apocalyptic stories that consitently fail to depict humanity as collaborating just because we can. Instead you get stories of raiders "man is the worst enemy actually" but no hope anywhere to be found. And despite this, when catastrophes like COVID hit, you absolutely do see in real life these completely unrelated social cells/cooperatives/clubs/etc spring into collective action without a reward. To help people, feed them, house them, because for a lot of communities every person they help is a person that will help them back in the future. That happy safe people you lend a hand to, do work for the sake of the community, for the greater good. And that method has worked for goddamn millenias.

People forget that used to be a time were global collaboration was our forte, where we all came together and it's not a coincidence, and it's not just a technological lull enforced on them by a capitalistic class. Yes people are being pushed to zone out of the end of the world, but outside of that they also need reminders of past stories and to be deconstructed out of their completely warped individualistic/capitalistic minds. But it's not just technological or ecological or whatever, it is a different way to operate as a species and it is ruining us. So name the root cause, of all problems, of geopolitics and technology and ecology and carework etc. all collapsing simultaneously. It's capitalism, it's a system with a thrust that is reaching it's unhealthy end goal. And until it's gone, our entire social system favors these people doubling down on focusing on their own navel. On privilegizing the safe harbor of their own lives and immediate vicinity over the fight of going in the streets with hundreds others are realizing their power. To get people to fight you will to remember they can trust each other, that the polarization runing us is a lie, that the world isn't full of evil assholes. But its hard when every asshole is given a gigantic stage and microphone to remind every one constantly.

I don't know where I'm going with this rant. Just hate this system.

People in this thread being like "just stop watching the news" and then what? Do you all not go outside and see the same misery and horror? Does capitalism stop crushing you once you don't look at your bank account? Do you all truly believe there is nothing that can be done about any of it and that thus it's needless pain??

To me this is how we got here, I kno I can just ostrich the suffering away but do none of you feel like the pain is precisely the mechanism that regulates our world and that it's a signal to try to change things? It's the pain of a dying world and I refuse to think this is business as usual. Past worst crisis didn't happen in an accelerationist decaying world they didn't happen while the planet was burning etc. You can't compare to the past. The problem is it's not really an experiment, it's what's happening all around us on every website. We're being flooded by entirely AI-generated content and users and conversations. And yes a lot of people fall for it, but I'm long past finding it funny, it doesn't make me happy to see the Internet I loved be a shell of its former self because everywhere people think along your lines. I'm not saying you're being evil or anything, just that there's way too many people out there contributing to the dead internet "just to see if it'd work" when in the end we know it works but more importantly we don't know how to stop it. You're just making the problem worse for laughs and I think that's a little too bad. It's not like the people you fooled would come to you or see your eventual "Sike!" video.
